Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved medications. They are custom-prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies based on a prescription written specifically for an individual patient. This is a legally recognized process when it meets applicable federal and state regulations.
Regulatory changes in 2025 and 2026 tightened the rules for compounded GLP-1 medications after the FDA determined that the shortages of the brand-name products had been resolved. As a result, compounding is now subject to stricter requirements than it was during the shortage period.
